And they need your help!
In partnership with South Philly High, LoMo has launched a fundraising campaign for a new SPHS campus master plan which would create what would be Philly’s first public school rooftop farm, right in South Philly.
With the plan to work with a local landscape architecture firm and expand to the roof, they’d be able to produce a massive amount of food for the neighborhood.

Calling all members and volunteers! Check out three ways you can help the South Philly Food Co-op this fall, from setting up pizza to becoming a project manager:

What:
If you’re interested in becoming involved with the Co-op but can’t help with this event then please consider the following opportunities:
Eager to see the Co-op open? Consider joining the Membership Committee. While all of the Co-op committees are integral to the success of the Co-op, it is our member-owners that make the Co-op possible. The main responsibility of the Membership Committee is to oversee member recruitment, engagement and training. The committee meets once a month and we’re looking for people to help us reach our next milestone of 400 members. Whether you have new and creative ideas for recruiting member-owners, suggestions for the member-owner orientation or want to help with record-keeping and other behind-the-scenes work, please email membership@
We are looking for someone to help us coordinate outreach to community groups. We have the established a group of committee members willing to speak about the Co-op, and now we need an organized person willing to work with our “speakers” and match them to community organizations for outreach and member recruitment. Some of the tasks involved with the position include: 1) maintain a list of active speakers bureau members, 2) assign civic and other community meetings to speakers bureau members and follow up to make sure they are being scheduled, 3) identify opportunities for the co-op to make presentations to other groups (community groups, parents groups, community parks and gardens, churches, etc.), and 4) triage requests for co-op presentations as needed. Much of this work can be done by email/telephone and is about 2-4 hours of time per month during the fall/spring months.
Volunteering is a great way to help the Co-op advance its main goal of the moment: getting to 400 members! If you are currently a member-owner, volunteering at any of these events will count toward your household’s annual 8 hour volunteer commitment. For those who haven’t become members yet but are interested in volunteering, your hours are being tracked and will be applied to your account when you join.

Volunteering at some of our upcoming member recruitment activities that will also help raise money for our start-up costs and spread the word about the Co-op is another great way to help out. Member-owner households can take care of part of their yearly, 8-hour volunteer commitment while not-yet member-owners can come and hang out with some really great volunteers and committee people. See below for upcoming opportunities.
Coffee with the Co-op
When: Saturday, May 12, 9am noon

A great way to meet your neighbors and future co-op members! Volunteers will distribute information about the Co-op, answer questions, distribute membership applications, and accept equity payments. Volunteers will be paired with an experienced committee member. These have been very successful so far in recruiting members and volunteers who have participated have reported that people really enjoy the interaction (and that there are plenty of nice dogs to pet).
Lo-Mo Flea Market

Growing Home is Nationalities Service Center’s (NSC) urban farm. The farm offers newly arrived refugees the opportunity to reconnect with their agricultural roots, strengthen bonds within their own ethnic community and connect with South Philadelphia’s other communities. Growing Home is also improving the participants’ health by increasing their access to affordable and nutritious food.
Located at 8th and Emily (just north of Snyder Ave), the Refugee Urban Farm was also featured in last fall’s South Philly Food Co-op Garden Tour.
We’re helping them spread the word about some upcoming workdays. They are also seeking extra garden hoes and flower plants as donations to help spruce up the block.
Vist http://nscfarming.wordpress.com for more info about the farm.
This Saturday (TOMORROW!), March 31, from 10 am – 2 pm they are having a workday in the garden!! They’re looking for help to distribute soil to fill a few new beds and to clean up the gardens, plant, and mulch.
On Saturday April 14, from 2pm – 5pm they will be doing a block clean up as part of the Philly Spring Clean-up.
They will also be out every Monday from 11-5, Thursday from 1-6, and most Tuesdays and welcome any volunteer help they can get.
Email forbesfarmer@yahoo.com or call 609-577-1471 with any questions.
